Bánh Xèo
Today was a good day. But this... this made it amazing..
Up until tonight, I had never tried bahn xeo. This 'sizzling cake' is now my favorite dish of all time! It is a savory crepe made out of flour and turmeric, stuffed with bean sprouts, shrimp and chicken. It is served with a plate of lettuce, mint, basil, cucumbers, pickled carrots and fish sauce. No two bahn xeo's are alike, so the stuffing and sides will vary depending on where you go. Also, not all Vietnamese restaurants serve this dish, but if you are in the mood for something refreshing and healthy, asian but not japanese, I have one spot in the Castro I highly recommend. Ask for Peter, he's a doll.

Cafe Colucci
I still love San Francisco, but I am beginning to love Oakland more. The weather is usually better and the people seem so much more down to earth. Bakesale Betty was closed today, so we wandered further down Telegraph and found Cafe Colucci. We were starving and they had outdoor seating. It was a done deal.
From left to right, we ordered begue alicha fitfit (lamb), doro tibs (chicken), eggplant tibs and a side of teff injera (bread). Delicious! The meat was tender, and flavorful. It was spicy without being overwheling. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area wanting to eat Ethiopian food. Just be ready to eat with your hands.

The Best Tri-Tip in Berkeley
There is an obscenely colorful shack on the corner of University and Walnut Ave. If you have ever wandered down that area you know exactly what I am referring to because it is the only random free standing structure located in the parking lot of Mike's Bike's Cyclery. I have walked passed it a million times, but never stopped to check it out. According to Yelp, Brazil Cafe has over 300 reviews averaging at 4.5 stars. Order #84 with a fresh fruit smoothie (acai or mango). You will be happy you did.

That's the owner Pedro. He is a sweetheart.

You've Never Heard of Red Velvet? WHAAAAA?
My Aunt and Uncle were in town from the UK this week for my older brother's wedding. We caught up on how our cousins were doing, their plans to build a house in the Philippines, and how my baking plans were going. I told them about the 150 cupcakes I need to make in about three weeks for my best friends wedding and that's when one of them blurted out, "Whots Red Velvet?".
I have to remember Red Velvet is a southern dessert. And I guess I couldn't be too shocked. Before I lived in Australia, I had never heard of Vegemite.
On the day of their departure, I stopped in Blissful Bites Bakery and ordered them a few keepsakes to bring home, including four Red Velvet cupcakes. (The owner was born and raised in Korea, then eventually made his way to San Francisco. With a passion for baking, he attended CCA and a few years later opened Blissful Bites.)

On any given day, they normally have twelve-fifteen different flavors on hand. Stop in and support local businesses.

Yemi
One of the girls from NYC was in town for work and we wanted to show her a good time. It was an east bay Saturday. We went to Cal day (where we picked up EDUN Live t-shirts at $15 bucks a pop) and stopped in at Shashamane Bar and Grill.
The owner Yemi, is an absolute doll. She told us about her years in Rome and later Boston for school. Nowadays, she helps her boyfriend run the restaurant and enjoys the weather in California. For dinner we ordered the lamb (Zilzil Tibs), chicken (Doro Tibs) and a side of collard greens (yumm). I'm not big on lamb, but I LOVED the chicken. It was soft, tender and well spiced. The Injera (soft Ethiopian bread) was good too - it is a cross between a crepe and a sponge cake, but not sweet. For dessert, I happened to bring in a homemade chocolate cake and they didn't charge that stupid cake cutting fee. We shared a few slices with the rest of the wonderful staff.
Good food, great company, and smiles all around. I will definitely be coming back.

Order Shishamane the drink.. soo GOOOD!

My Favorite Bakery and Cafe
I would like to keep this place a secret.
But if you didn't hear it from me, someone else would tell you.
Avec plasir ... Bonjour.
The Song Shan location has a full on breakfast and lunch menu in addition to their pastries and desserts. I ate here almost everyday. For a hearty meal, my personal recommendations are the fried chicken sandwich, friend rice or beef hamburger. No joke. If you have a sweet tooth or are a carb-o-holic, you'll think you stepped into heaven.
Bon appétit!

1885 Burger Store
Am I really saying this?
It was better than In N Out, Fudd Ruckers, Johnny Rockets, Burger Meister, Darla's and even ... Big Mouth.
In Taiwan of all places.
I'm convinced.
Anything is possible.

Me and My Cafes
When I am on vacation, even when I am traveling alone, I always try to set aside time for myself. In Taipei, this means finding a quaint dog-friendly café, with free wi-fi, delicious desserts, hip décor, comfortable couches and Louis playing in the background. Here are a few places I checked out.
Mucho Mucho Cafe
No.29, Alley 5, Lane 107, Sec. 1, Fuxing S. Rd, Taipei

Cozy place.
The Path Cafe
10, Alley 33, Ln 216, Zhoungxiao E Rd, Taipei

I think I make better cheesecake.
My Sweetie Pie
No. 3, Lane 93, ShiDa Rd, Taipei

The apple pie was pretty good.
Insomnia
13, Ln 93, Shida Rd, Taipei

There is a 150NT minimum pp at this place. Did they just charge us for 300NT for microwaved mashed potatoes, vegetables and salmon?
