My First Wedding Tasting

I happened to be catering cupcakes the same day Greenfish served lunch at LinkedIn. Mina, who happens to be the sweetest person ever (you really would have mistaken her for a fallen angel) asked if I would be interested in catering a wedding with her. UMMM, HELLO? ABSOLUTELY! I was jumping in my skin. Calm, cool and collected, "Sure." We exchanged cards and that was that.

I met the lovely couple at local coffee shop in Noe Valley. I asked them how they met and I think my heart melted and poured out onto the table. I really wanted to be a part of their special day. We talked pricing, quantity, deposits and decorations. It was hugs all round before we left to continue on with the rest of our day. They said they would be in touch. Pretty stoked.

Bánh Xèo

Today was a good day. But this... this made it amazing..

Up until tonight, I had never tried bahn xeo. This 'sizzling cake' is now my favorite dish of all time! It is a savory crepe made out of flour and turmeric, stuffed with bean sprouts, shrimp and chicken. It is served with a plate of lettuce, mint, basil, cucumbers, pickled carrots and fish sauce. No two bahn xeo's are alike, so the stuffing and sides will vary depending on where you go. Also, not all Vietnamese restaurants serve this dish, but if you are in the mood for something refreshing and healthy, asian but not japanese, I have one spot in the Castro I highly recommend. Ask for Peter, he's a doll.

Garage Dining

Toyose is a Korean restaurant located in the outer sunset. If it weren't for the sign and awning, it would be easy to mistake this for another house. At first, I wasn't even sure how to get in. But once your inside, you forget all about its exterior facade and escape into a real restaurant. I ordered a plate of Beef and Kimchee fried rice. Total: $12, for fried rice? It must be good..

And it was. The dish was seasoned well, but the portion was small (even for me and I don't eat too much to begin with). I doubt I'll be going back..

Sunshine, Bikes and Fresh Pupusas

Saturday night was crazy to say the least. It ended with us watching a confrontation between two egotistical maniacs outside of a bar. A few paces later, gunfire, then gasps and "OH my god!", and finally sirens. We locked up our bikes and hauled ass home.

It is now Sunday morning. We woke up recapping all the events from the night before. Although most of it was a blur, we remembered ditching our bikes somewhere. Half awake we rolled out of bed and walked down to the Mission. We stopped in a few shops picking up freshly squeezed orange juice and a pumpkin muffin. The sun was shining and the closer we got to Mission Street, the clearer the blaring music became. Carnival! Ethnically dressed dance teams, half-naked women, men on stilts, parade floats and capoeira groups were so colorful and energetic. It was hard to believe this was the same street from last night.

We turned down 16th and found a woman freshly preparing pupusas outside of the El Salavadorean restaraunt next to Skylark. We sat curbside, in a shaded alley across the street scarfing down this traditional Salvadorian dish. I couldn't be happier.

We eventually found our bikes and Mimi's seat was stolen.

blah

I still love San Francisco.

Fleur de Sel

You might wonder why an 8 oz jar of Fleur de Sel (french for flower of salt) averages around $8 a pop. It is a result of sea water, hand harvested off the coast of France and naturally processed by the sun and wind. It's culinary uses are endless - try it with salads, meats, desserts and everything in between.

Pictured below is just one of many popular combinations (with chocolate and caramel)

This is a chocolate caramel fleur de sel cupcake baked fresh from Noe Valley Bakery. And yes it tastes as amazing at it looks.

I couldn't help but wonder what # tip they used to frost these cupcakes. What porportion of baking soda/baking powder did they use to get these babies so plump? Does the bakery create large batches of these? Does that mean they really add only one egg at a time? Wouldn't that entail overworking the dough? Piping the filling into each one must have been fun. I'm guessing they use real butter instead of shortening and eggs, also at room temperature. Dry ingredients are added in parts ...

Noe Valley Bakery

Noe Valley Bakery is nothing short of amazing. I was first introduced to them sometime last year as we celebrated Nosheen's birthday with an 8" carrot cake. I have since have been hooked. This bakery carries a large selection of breads, pastries, cakes, cookies and pies all made in-house (just peer over the counter and you can see the busy bees at work for yourself). This place is homely in every sense of the word, which is hard to say for most places in Noe Valley. I am comforted by everything I have ever ordered and I have yet to try something that is overly sweet. Don't take my word for it, or the 310reviews on Yelp (4 out of 5 stars). Check them out for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Local Favorites:
- Most-est cupcakes
- NoeOs
- Blueberry-Pecan scones ($2.35)
- Chocolate Chip Cookies ($1.00)
- Cloud 9 Cake
- Carrot Cake (This will be my downfall)

For all your non-bakers who want to impress your family and friends, they also carry a freezer full of bake-at-home cookies, pie shells and puff pastry.

Below is an excerpt on from by Tara Duggan's article SCRUMPTIOUS SCONES / Bakers share tips for creating a no-fail batch). Micheal Gassen was gracious enough to share his blueberry scone recipe and essential baking tips.

"Bakers at San Francisco's Noe Valley Bakery & Bread Co. add pieces of frozen butter to the dough so that the butter stays in chunks all the way to the oven. Then the dough is rolled into logs and cut into rounds to avoid being overworked.

"The least amount of stress you put on a product the better. If you think about pie dough or molding bread if you overwork it it becomes tough. We want the scone dough to be shaggy" says owner Michael Gassen peering into a 20-quart mixer bowl full of purplish dough studded with 1/2-inch chunks of butter blueberries and pecans."

INGREDIENTS:
7 ounces cold unsalted butter
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup chopped toasted
pecans
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 375°. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment or grease them with butter. Chop the butter into 1/4-inch pieces. (It is important to make the pieces no larger than 1/4 inch because they are difficult to make any smaller once frozen.) Spread on a plate and place in the freezer until hard about 30 minutes or overnight.

Combine the flour sugar baking powder salt and baking soda in a large bowl. Add the butter and chop with two butter knives or a pastry blender until it is well blended and some of the butter is crumbly. Mix in the pecans. Gradually add the buttermilk 1/3 cup at a time and mix gently until all ingredients are incorporated but not completely blended. You might not use up all of the liquid. The end result should be a shaggy mass.

Sprinkle the blueberries on top of the dough and only mix enough to evenly distribute the berries.

Gently form the dough into 1/3-cup balls and place them 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheets. (You may freeze the balls at this point and bake them later. Once frozen place scones in freezer storage bags.)

Bake 24-26 minutes or until cooked through and golden. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.

Yields 16 scones.

PER SCONE: 200 calories 3 g protein 21 g carbohydrate 12 g fat (7 g saturated) 28 mg cholesterol 87 mg sodium 1 g fiber.

Michael mentions that it is ok to freeze the scones, just note that the cook time may be slightly longer.

Thank you Michael and Mary for sharing your love of baking.

Little Crumbs in San Francisco

Last week, I was reading through the most reviewed San Francisco bakeries on YELP. With 697 reviews averaging around 4 stars, I was intrigued. I visited their website soon thereafter, clicked through their gallery and read the 'about us' section. I was hooked. Their cakes, cookies, tarts and cupcakes are beautifully designed - classic and simple. I'm dying to know if they taste as good as they look.

We ordered the Scharffen Berger Mini for only $5.

YEAP.. just as I suspected. SOOO EFFIN goood!

I want to go back and try their ginger cupcake and perhaps stage for a day in their kitchen located in Jack London Square.

Happy Birthday MLK

It is a rainy Monday afternoon and what better way to enjoy the day than to check out a few bakeries in the city. My first stop - Paulette Macarons. I've seen a number of macaron recipes online and have been dying to test them out. However, I thought it would be a good idea to try a 'real' macaron before undertaking such tasks.

Hmm.. macarons are interesting to say the least. We sampled the earl grey and New Orleans praline first. I'm not really sure what to compare these to - they are distinctly flavored and uniquely designed. I bought a half a dozen for $10.50. Eek. A great novelty gift idea for sure, but personally I would have much rather bought a chunky, chewy cookie paired with a glass of milk.

We're Open till Midnight

This restaurant located in Portero Hill is all about fresh ingredients, housemade pastas, thin crust pizza, and edison-esque lighting and decor. Great for a ladies night out (sit at one of their pub height setups) or date night with your significant other. For dinner we ordered the margherita and topinambur pizza with a side of sweet potatoes. No drinks.. just water - for a total of $38 or so dollars. Not too shabby and more than enough food to feed three famished females (granted we requested two helpings of bread). It was a great start to our night. Sure it could have been the company that made this place memorable, but I left wanting to go back (and I don't even like pizza!)

Arizmendi Bakery SF

I have been wanting to try Arizmendi SF's pizza for some time now. (The line is always out the door at their Oakland location) They generally close up shop around 7pm and I almost never get back into the city in time. With slight overcast, I hopped on my bike and headed over to 9th and Irvine. If you don't know about Arizmendi pizza, the menu changes daily. They offer hot or lite-baked, by the slice ($2.25), half ($9) or whole ($18).

Today's pizza was mushroom, arugula and olive oil, served over thin crust. YUMM.. they have a monthly calendar.. check them out at www.arizmendibakery.org.

Squat and Gobble Sundays

Brunch with the bubs is one of my favorite past times.

Crab Cake Florentine: Crab cakes, two poached eggs and sauteed spinach over two toasted english muffins topped with hollandaise sauce. Served with rosemary potatoes. We also ordered a side of chicken apple sausage. Delish!

Chicken Pesto Crepe: Mozzarella, onions, sliced chicken breast, pesto and sun dried tomatoes. Served with rosemary potatoes.

Squat and Gobble is perfect for families, couples, singles, friends, the young and old alike. I will definitely be coming back.

Happy Birthday Dad!

To say I don't like eating at Chinese restaurants would be an understatement. Too much salt, too much oil, and too much MSG should make anyone an unsatisfied customer. There exists however a vegetarian Chinese place that I can't rave enough about - Enjoy Vegetarian Restaurant in the Inner Sunset. This place is perfect for those who need to watch their diet (due to weight management, religious affiliations, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout, etc.), but don't want to sacrifice flavor.

We ordered the family special - a $69 preset menu that feeds about 9 people, although it says 6-8.. It is also a good way to try some of the best dishes this restaurant has to offer.

Combination Platter*: (Soybean Sheet, BBQ Pork, Tofu, Sweet & Sour Wheat Gluten)

Fragrant Crispy Chicken*:

Veggie Shark Fin Soup*:

Black Pepper Sauce with Steak Meat & Green Vegetable:

Bean Curd Rolls stuffed with Cabbage and Mushroom. Served with baby bok choy:

Lotus Root, Lily, Vegetables, Peas & Ginko*:

String Beans w/ Shredded Homemade Dry Tofu:

Eggplant with Sea Bass*:

Taro, Sesame Veggie Chicken Cooked with Coconut Sauce*:

Dessert is always different every time we come here. Unfortunately, I have NO idea what we had, but it was really good.

My mom's birthday is next week and I am already looking forward to her dinner.

Best Falafel: Union Square

Theatre Too Cafe

I was in the mood for some good falafel and sure Oasis is about half a block from my work, but the one and only time I went, I was unforgettably disappointed. I begin my search on yelp and it isn't long before I come across the reviews for Theatre Too Cafe. With 4.5 out of 5 stars I couldn't resist checking it out ... and BOY were the reviews right. This operation is run by the sweetest and fun-loving couple. Their falafel wraps are huge (12" at least) and served with fresh tahini yogurt, lush lettuce, red onions and large soft balls of falafel - also available with some heat (just say yes to a spicy order). At less than $6 each, what's NOT to love? They also sell half portions (which is what I should have got) for only $3.25. I talked to a few of their customers and they can't rave enough about this place, "Yes the falafel is amazing. The rice and lentils are great. OOoh and so are the meat balls! Try the gyros - heck you can't go wrong with anything from this place." I would definitely go back and encourage everyone to check them out. Support your local small business owners, especially the ones that really care about their customers.

**My apologies for not posting a picture... before I knew it, I had scarfed the entire 12" of falafel goodness**

The BEST Philly Cheesesteak in the City

I'm not a huge fan of philly cheesesteak to begin with, but this panini style sandwich from The Grove Fillmore makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Thick, tender strips of Niman Ranch beef, swiss cheese(?), grilled onions and mushrooms - and the bread TO DIE FOR. The portions here are pretty hefty in size. What's not to love? The venue itself is unpretentious yet hip, busy but still manages to be quaint. As if that wasn't enough, the staff are genuinely helpful and the cafe is dog friendly. We also ordered the Berkeley bowl. Don't be turned off that it comes with Ranch. The dressing is very subtle and oh so yummy.

**I highly recommend ordering food to go and chowing down at the new AMC Sundance Theater (balcony seating only).

***UPDATE***I tried the same sandwich over at the Chestnut Street location (Marina). Just as I was ordering, I noticed the chalkboard menu didn't mention use of Niman Ranch beef, but didn't think anything of it. Let's just say, they probably omitted that for a reason because the sandwich wasn't nearly as good. I guess the cafes are created equal.
